Week 10 Post 3: Chapter 14

Something that I found from Chapter 14 interesting is about Generalizations. From the Epstein text means that we are to make a claim about an issue, such as for a group or population to generalize an argument. There are three different things to point out for generalizations: 1. The sample is representative 2. The sample is big enough 3. The sample is studied well. What I just listed are all the things for premises to be considered as a good generalization.  In other words, for generalizations to be accurate, we need to consider the population as a whole with enough data to prove the problem. There should also be a small error margin for the population. This also includes variation, because it gives the data different things to compare it with. If we were to just compare one issue by itself, there wouldn’t be a correct answer due to the fact that you are basing your answers with one type of generalization.

  1. You gave a great summary on generalizations. It is important to understand the concept of generalizations since we all do it. Also, it is used for polls, research, and for many career fields in order to find who their audience are. However, sometimes polls don't use the 3 requirements to make a claim using generalization.

  2. It also can hinder the audience perspective by showing a biased report to pursued them.

  3. I really like your post on generalization. You did a good review on it and made it easy to understand.
It can relate to the third group assignment project that we had recently. Having the group make a decision was generalizing it. Not everyone had the same opinion and choices, but the results were basically generalized. As well it can relate to votes, surveys, and polls.
For my personally generalizations are too broad and not specific enough to obtain accurate data. But we generalize a lot of things in our lives. Like not going in to much detail about something can be seen as generalization.

  4. The summary you did on generalizations was really good. Based on your review, I can tell that you really understand the material. The idea of generalization is an important one, especially in college. In class I have professors that lecture very fast, and its up to the students to write down the pertinent information in a timely fashion because sometimes the professor wont repeat what he or she said. People say you must paraphrase instead, but I personally like to just write down the general ideas of the lecture. Short and sweet is the best for me and how I have always done it. .
